Are you in Pain?

“A pain free, active lifestyle is not only possible, but it is the way you should expect to feel and live, no matter your age, no matter your previous experience.” —Pete Egoscue

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is your body's way of telling you that something is terribly wrong. Your ancestors have given you a human body that is perfectly capable of managing your health and healing, and pain is the message: “Pay attention, something is happening that shouldn't be happening.“ Pain warns of impending danger.

The pain doesn't tell us what to do about it, unfortunately. Just that something is wrong, and we better do something about it.

Myriad ways exist these days to address chronic musculoskeletal pain from the simple (e.g., aspirin to reduce inflammation) to complex and very expensive (e.g., cut off the joint and replace it), and lots in between: drugs, manipulation, energy work, etc., etc.

It helps to understand what is causing the pain, but very few treatments address this. The human body has a functional design blueprint that is well-defined and can be used as a template to evaluate what your body is doing to violate the blueprint design. Your body's deviation from this standard design is what is causing your pain. It's that simple. If you are in pain, you are violating the standard design.

That's not so say that you did something wrong. Nearly all of the compensations and habitual ways you have of holding yourself don't come from conscious choices that you made or did not make. They come from lifestyle. Follow this link to learn more about why chronic pain is such an epidemic.

If you correct your deviations from the standard human design, your pain will go away. Egoscue University-trained posture therapists help you identify and correct your posture with simple analytical tools and simple exercises to isolate and re-educate your muscles. It's the decidedly low tech solution and it works every time if you are willing to take responsibility for your health and do the work. Simply starting or continuing an exercise program won't alleviate the pain because it's necessary to get the body to follow it's design motion. You must straighten before you strengthen.
